Slingshot helped Lockheed with technology evaluation and development for a new manufacturing system, initially targeted to aid in the production efforts for the F/A 22 Raptor and the C-130 Hercules programs. This system, termed Project SCAPE, addresses the fundamental challenge of attaching aircraft skins to the underlying rib structure of the aircraft, which is obscured by the skin panels during the manufacturing process.
The SCAPE system is intended to capture positional data for the rib structure in real time, as the skin panels are attached. This approach ensures accurate placement of fasteners even as the rib structure shifts throughout the assembly process.
